Itchy Skin

Your skin might itch for various reasons ranging from bug bites to chicken pox, a brush with poison oak, an outbreak of hives, cold weather, or a variety of dermatological conditions. Depending on the cause of the itching, the affected area may look red, rough, bumpy, scaly, or completely normal. No matter what causes the skin itching, though, we know it’s uncomfortable, and you want relief as quickly as possible.

In addition to making you more comfortable, treating itching is also essential for the skin's health since scratching can tear up the skin's surface and lead to complications like infections and scarring. At Dermatology Associates, we treat people experiencing itchy skin virtually every day. Our team will work with you to identify the environmental, biological, dietary, or hereditary cause of the itching and provide long-lasting relief you can count on.

Symptoms of Itchy Skin

Itchy skin can impact small areas of the body, such as a spot on an arm or a leg, or larger areas, like the scalp, back, or entire body. While itchy skin often looks different, itching can occur without causing any noticeable changes to the skin.

Symptoms of itchy skin often include:

  • Redness
  • Scratching or scarring
  • Blisters, bumps, and spots
  • Dry, cracked, or weeping skin
  • Patches that feel or appear leathery or scaly

Treatments for Itchy Skin

These treatments can help soothe itchy, dry skin:

1

Cold therapy.

Apply a cool compress, cloth, or ice pack for 5-10 minutes or until the itch subsides.
2

Oatmeal baths.

Oatmeal baths are very soothing for the skin and can be particularly helpful for people experiencing chickenpox, hives, sunburn, or exposure to poison ivy or oak.
3

Moisturization.

Any moisturizer you choose should be free of additives, alcohol, fragrances, perfumes, and other potential irritants.
4

Topical anesthetics.

Topical anesthetics containing pramoxine can soothe the skin and relieve serious itching.
5

Cooling agents.

Cooling agents like calamine or menthol can cool the surface of the skin and relieve some of the burning associated with itching.
